Ammolite

Ammolite is a rare Canadian gemstone found in southern Alberta. This beautiful gemstone comes from an Ammonite, a creature that inhabited the prehistoric oceans of the world for about 275 million years. Ammonites resemble a nautilus like shape and can be found throughout the world. Through 75 million years of element, heat and pressure changes, Ammonite fossils discovered in southern Alberta are found with natural occurring colourful mosaic patterns.

In 1981 "The International Coloured Gemstone Commission" recognised the Ammonite's fossilised shell as the gemstone "Ammolite".

Ammolite was originally discovered by the Blackfoot Indians, who called it "Iniskim" or Buffalo Stone. In 1908 a member of the Geological Survey Team of Canada found colourful Ammonites along the St. Mary River in Alberta. It's potential as a gemstone was realised in the 1960's.
